Finding the Right Remedy

Homeopathic Materia Medica are filled with thousands of remedies and there are new remedies being discovered, documented and used in practice on a regular basis.  Each remedy is coded with hundreds and even thousands of different symptoms that uniquely identify it apart from one remedy picture to the next.  This unique information is what characterises a remedy in terms of using it in homeopathic practice.  And that is why it is so important to understand your experience of being unwell as an individual, so that a remedy which has the same sorts of coded characteristic symptoms can be matched to the way you experience being sick.

When you visit a homeopath the aim is to find out how your experience of being unwell is different from everybody elses.  Homeopathy is based on the idea of individualisation, because the way in that we experience being unwell differs from one person to the next.   Although your isolated pathology is taken into consideration and highlighted with importance, the true aim of homeopathy is to understand a more complete picture of your whole self.  The way you think, feel and experience everything that you do in relation to being sick provides your homeopath with the most important and useful information.

It’s important to highlight that although there are common remedies that suit many general 1st aid situations, like Arnica for bruising or say Apis for stings and bites, more complex acute and chronic cases require strategic case taking, thorough case analysis and the prescription knowledge of a qualified homeopathic practitioner.  As you can see, finding the right remedy has many different components, but essentially it all boils down to understanding you, the person.

Acute & Constitutional Prescribing

Acute and constitutional prescribing underpins homeopathic practice though it’s always important to remember that homeopathy treats the individual, not the disease name, body part or pathology diagnosis.  But what does that really mean?  Simple, when we are healthy we all experience life differently, for example one person might feel invigorated taking a hot bath, whereas another person finds hot baths unbearable.  Homeopathy works on this principle and aims to understand the individualising factors of your illness in exactly the same way.

But what does that really mean?  Simple. When we are healthy we all experience life differently. For example, one person might feel invigorated when taking a hot bath, whereas another person finds hot baths unbearable.  Homeopathy works on this principle and aims to understand the individualising factors of your illness in exactly the same way.

In an acute illness such as a cough, cold or flu, the homeopath looks for the same kind of individualising information.   For example, one person with a chest cold might feel better for being out in the open air, whilst another person with a chest cold might feel better for being in a room with all the doors and windows closed.  The homeopath gathers this individualising information from lots of different areas, such as aetiology (when/how it started), moderating factors (better/worse for), appetite, energy levels, discharges and even your thoughts and feelings.

Constitutional prescribing works in exactly the same way, but instead the homeopath individualises the experience of your chronic condition.  This could be any ongoing ailment, whether mental, emotional or physical, or all of them combined.  Once again, the aim is to understand not only your symptoms in isolation, but how they affect you at a deeper level of experience, which highlights the interrelationship between your mind and your body.

In both acute and constitutional cases there is a detailed level of questioning and analysis, so that a thorough understanding can be made of who it is that you are and how it is that you experience being unwell.  This way, an accurate prescription can be made based on how you experience your illness, as well as your disease and pathology diagnosis.

Homeopathic Consultations Tony Fox Homeopathic Consultations Tony Fox

What to expect from homeopathic consultations

When I first went to see a homeopath 17 years ago, I had no idea of what to expect, all I knew was that I felt unwell and had a strong inclination to explore a safe and natural alternative to health.  During the consultation we talked about my presenting complaint but my homeopath went on to ask an range of questions that built a more complete picture of who I was in relation to this.  These included medical and family history, my thoughts, feelings, desires and aversions, moderating factors, sleep and eating patterns, responses to atmospheric conditions, and many more.

Never before had a practitioner taken such an interest in who I was and what made me tick.  This was a positive experience, the consultation process and following treatment inspired me as a patient on account of the efforts to thoroughly understand my case.  I felt relieved and liberated at the same time, because I could see that my homeopath was trying to get to the bottom of something much deeper than the superficial nature of what I'd presented with.

And this is what sets homeopathy apart from a conventional approach, it treats the individual and not a single part, organ or disease name.  Homeopathy isn't a blanket approach of one size fits all, it is individualised treatment based on a rigorous understanding of what makes us whole and how all parts interrelate.  That's why initial consultations take around 1.5 hours and follow ups 30 to 45 minutes, because time is needed to make a thorough assessment of your case and to see how you have responded to treatment.
