Supporters of Homeopathy

Since its inception 200 years ago, homeopathy has attracted support from the European royalty, the educated elite, and leading artists.  It was then no surprise that the most expensive painting that was ever sold was that of a portrait of a homeopathic physician, Dr. Gachet, drawn by her personal friend and patient, Vincent Van Gogh. 

The British royal family has had a long-time and deep appreciation for homeopathic medicine, ever since Queen Adelaide (1792–1849), wife of King William IV, first made public her special interest in this “new medicine” in 1835.  The early growth of homeopathy in Britain in the mid-1800s became possible in large part through royal support and British aristocracy.  Not only did British royalty express their support for homeopathy by going to homeopaths and openly encouraging others to do so, they also put their money where their beliefs lay.  Many British royalty were patrons to homeopathic organisations and hospitals. Until her death in 2002, at the ripe old age of 101, Her Majesty the Queen Mother, was the principal royal patron of the British Homeopathic Association.  The Queen, Princess Anne and Prince Charles all use homeopathy and advocate its benefits and use.  

Current celebrities who use and support homeopathy include Paul McCartney, David Beckham, Twiggy, Roger Daltrey, Caprice, Susan Hampshire, Tina Turner, Louise Jameson, Gaby Roslin, Jude Law, Sadie Frost, Nadia Sawalha, Annie Lennox, Richard Branson, Peter Hain MP, Jo Wood, Boris Becker, Martina Navratilova, Whoopi Goldberg, Debra Stephenson and Meera Syal, just to name a few.  Past famous people who have used homoeopathy include Mark Twain, Mahatma Ghandi, WC Fields, Grace Kelly, Lauren Bacall, President Lincoln and many, many more. 

Homeopathy also enjoys a high level of support from politicians. In 2007, 206 MPs signed an Early Day Motion welcoming the contribution of homeopathy to NHS healthcare.

Who uses homeopathy?

Homeopathy has been around for over 200 years and is more commonly used than you might think.  According to the World Health Organisation homeopathy is the second largest system of medicine in the world.  Homeopathy is currently used in over 80 countries.  It has legal recognition as an individual system of medicine in 42 countries and is recognised as a part of complementary and alternative medicine in 28 countries. 

New market data shows that over half the German population has used homeopathic medicines and that the number of users has gone up from 53% of the population in 2009 to 60% in 2014.  According to recent surveys in France, an astounding 40% of the French public have used homeopathic medicines, and 39% of French physicians have prescribed them.  In 2004 a total of 7.5 million Italians use homeopathic medicines and in Spain, approximately 15% of the population have used homeopathic medicine.  In India there are over 100 million people who use and depend solely on this form of medicinal care.  

Here in the UK homeopathy is incredibly popular and there are over 3000 homeopathic practitioners. The British Royal family has been under homeopathic care since 1820 and there has always been a Royal Homeopathic doctor.  The three (previously five) NHS homeopathic hospitals in the UK has published the findings of in-house patient surveys.  Patients with a very wide range of chronic conditions were asked to report how they felt after homeopathic treatment.  On average, 70% of follow up patients seen at homeopathic hospitals report a positive outcome from homeopathic treatment.
